Wedding day speeches - how to do a good one

We have been privvy to some wonderful heart tugging speeches over the years. It takes a pretty hard heart to not be moved. We've seen the bride cry, the groom cry, the Mums and Dads... even we've been known to shed a secret tear or two while capturing these intense emotional moments!

So, what are the secrets to making a good speech?

  1. Be yourself. You don't have to be a comedian or deliver an Oscar nominated speech. The trick is to be totally genuine and speak from the heart.

  2. Share. Don't let out any deep and dark secrets but do share candid and personal moments that you've spent with the bride or groom.

  3. Thank you's... who to thank...

    1. all your wedding guests for being with you today

    2. the guests who have contributed to helping you plan the wedding day

    3. guests who have travelled from afar to celebrate with you

    4. your parents for their guidance and support, and any other important family members.

  4. Timing. Don't make the speech too long! Remember people are waiting to eat and dance and get on with the party.

  5. Practice. Take time before your wedding to practice your speech. After writing your speech you could ask a friend to be your audience while you read it aloud. The more you practice, the more relaxed you will be on the night.

  6. Relax. Breathe. Enjoy! Sounds simple but don't let nerves get the better of you. Remember, you have been chosen to make a speech because you are loved and respected.
